FibroFibromyalgia is a common condition that is characterized by chronic pain and stiffness in various different muscles, tendons, and ligaments. This condition is also often associated with extreme fatigue. Both symptoms are easily exacerbated by trivial physical activity. When the joints or muscles are tested, patients with fibromyalgia show no abnormalities of the joints or muscles. Women are usually more likely to suffer with this condition, which increases in frequency with age. The exact causes of fibromyalgia are still unknown. What has been determined over the years of studying this condition is that nutrition may play a key role in preventing or relieving symptoms. Patients who eat healthy, well-balanced diets tend to have few incidences of fibromyalgia. Exercise has also been found to help decrease the risk.

There are no specific tests for fibromyalgia. Your doctor will likely ask you several questions about your medical history and perform a physical examination to help come to a diagnosis. Most physical examinations will test 18 characteristically tender sites. If the patient reports pain when pressure is applied to at least 11 of the 18 sites, then the doctor will likely diagnose the patient with fibromyalgia. Further tests will also be done to rule out any other possible disorders that have similar symptoms, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

There are several ways to treat fibromyalgia. Over-the-counter pain relievers are commonly suggested and can be taken as necessary. Regular physical exercise is often effective at relieving pain and stiffness as well as improving circulation. Often patients are hesitant to start exercise programs because the initial start can be painful. Always consult with your doctor to determine which types of exercise are right for you. Low-impact activities like walking, swimming, and bicycling are helpful if done for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Muscle pain can be relieved by taking hot baths, using a heating pad, or having a massage. Choosing a well-balanced diet, eliminating processed foods, increasing fiber and liquids can also be extremely beneficial at relieving symptoms.
