California Food Handler Card Law

The California Food Handler Card Law SB 602 requires all California foodservice workers to receive food safety training before or within 30 days of their employment at a food service establishment. Signed into law at the end of 2010, it requires each worker to receive a certain, specified level of training across the entire state. By July 1, 2011, every employee in the state must have received their instruction, passed an examination and acquired their card. Those hired after July 1 will have 30 days to complete these tasks.

Courses will be offered both online and in a classroom environment. Valid throughout most of the state, each card is good for three years. The cost of the card is $15 and the cost of training should fall on the employer, exempting workers from further economic hardship.
