What Type of Training Does It Take To Become A Chef?

Those who really wish to become a cook should know what they are getting themselves into. In short, one should really enjoy spending time in a kitchen. Preferably a fast paced kitchen with a number of different types of people working around you. Moreover, one should really enjoy spending a lot of time in this kitchen, as the job of a top chef is quite demanding. You may not realize this now, but the skills learned in each stage of education, whether high school, college or even graduate school can be leveraged in a top chef position, throughout restaurants and kitchens worldwide. For those who have a college degree or higher, even if it is in a totally different field, do not despair. These skills will undoubtedly assist you in your pursuit of a culinary degree and career.

Courses such as math, accounting, history, psychology, applied sciences, anthropology, economics, marketing, art and even music can be extremely beneficial to a chef. Especially if the food you are creating is international, regional or has a rich history. The more a chef knows about the world around him, the more he or she will understand about the food they are preparing, the customers they are serving, the processes they are using to run their kitchen, the employees and personnel working for and around them and the way their establishment is run, funded and marketed to the public. Every skill can be utilized in some way.

As you gain knowledge and experience in the culinary arts through your chosen program, professional internship and eventual job, pay close attention to where your specific skills lie. Many times, the skills you have gained before you enter the culinary field can help you in many ways. Different skill sets will compliment different areas of a culinary career.
