Depending on experience, a dietician with at least a bachelor’s degree can range from $40,000 to $60,000 in the first 3 to 5 years out of school. Salaries will increase with more experience, many times as much as 2% to 5% per year, adjusted with inflation. What is required for advancement in this field?
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts a larger than average growth for the dietetics industry over the next 6 years, faster than many other professions even within health care. The fastest and surest way to advance is with a bachelor’s degree in dietetics, nutrition or a related field. Once dietitians have graduated, certification by the American Dietetic Association and continuing education will also advance any career. Overall, good patient care and hard work will payoff more than anything else. Choose a job environment in which you are happy where you are treating the types of patients in which you are interested. This will increase your chances of performing well and being promoted.

Dietitians are absolutely in high demand. Dietitians work normal business hours in most settings, but the environment in which you work can dictate whether your schedule is normal or not. For instance, those working in private clinics, food companies and school districts can expect to work a normal 40-hour week while those in hospitals and care facilities may work at night or longer than normal shifts. Your choice depends on the type of dietetics you would like to practice.
Who Do Dietitians Work With?
Dietitians work with a wide list of different health care professionals, businesses, social workers, psychiatrists, hospital administrators, doctors and care givers. Depending on the environment in which they work, dietitians can work with a variety of these people all in just one day.
Hospital, clinic or long term care facility dietitians will work more with doctors and nurses than those in a weight loss clinic or health club. Here they may work more with therapists and fitness professionals. Moreover, those working in the corporate food world will probably not see another health care professional during an average day, instead interacting with business people, advertisers, research analysts, accountants and other non-medical professionals. Once again, the type of people you choose to work with will invariably dictate the type of industry you choose to pursue.
