Culinary Schools in Idaho

With such a rich food culture, Idaho proves to be an excellent place for foodies and culinary arts students alike. Whether it's the state's famous russet potatoes or Boise's unique Basque food (Boise has one of the largest Basque populations in America), one simply can't go wrong by eating and studying cooking in Idaho.

The Advantages of Culinary Arts Schools in Idaho

It's not the number of culinary schools in Idaho that set it apart (though there are plenty). It's the state's environment and people that make Idaho such a great place to pursue a culinary education. With a blend of Pacific Northwest and mountains, Idaho has just the right conditions for plenty of local produce, which leads to several farmers markets each year (think huckleberries and wild mushrooms). Plus, the state attracts plenty of seafood fanatics to its mountains for trout fishing. Idaho truly has variety when it comes to food.

Beyond culinary schools and becoming a chef, Idaho is just a great place to be for health-conscious people. The amount of local foods the state is able to produce means fresher, more natural food for locals and visitors. The fact that the state's mountains attract elk and deer and that Idaho is full of rivers full of fish and fields full of natural produce means locals have the opportunity to get a well-balanced meal on a regular basis. With all this fresh food available, Idaho is a great place to open up a restaurant or become a nutritionist or dietitian to offer expert advice to health-conscious locals.

Idaho Culinary Employment Outlook

Things are only looking up for chefs and cooks in both Idaho and America. The Idaho Department of Labor projects an 8.5 percent growth for chefs and head cooks between 2010 and 2020 (lmi.idaho.gov/, 2012). The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that cooks and food preparation workers will grow in employment by 8 percent between 2010 and 2020 (BLS.gov/ooh, 2012).

In addition to large-scale positive projections, many individuals also are optimistic about their own personal expectations. According to the National Restaurant Association, 71 percent of adults are attempting to eat healthier than they did two years ago. Also, 86 percent of adults say there are more healthful options at restaurants now than there were two years ago. Gluten-free cuisine is one of the top health trends now (ranking at No. 4). This presents a great opportunity for Idaho residents and culinary students, since the state is filled with healthy, natural options.

Idaho Culinary Wages

The Idaho Department of Labor reports the following (lmi.idaho.gov, 2012):

Idaho Culinary Professions
Hourly Mean Wages (2012)
Chefs and head cooks
$14.71
Food service managers
$19.4
Food preparation workers
$9.33

Of course, which restaurant or venue a person's at will help determine how much the pay is (as can tips, sometimes). Regardless, culinary students and those in the food business in Idaho have it good: Fresh materials and health-conscious foodies. Seems like a winning combination.
