Nutritionist and Dietitian Programs in Michigan

This page will provide information on how to become a nutritionist in Michigan, the types of nutritionist schools in Michigan, and the pay and projected employment outlook for the occupation. Use the links on the right and sources below to seek out further information.

Campus-Based vs. Online Nutritionist Education in Michigan

Nutritionist schools in Michigan may include subject-specific courses such as physiology, nutrition and management, as well as prerequisites such as science, English, math, food science and biology.

Online schools may provide an advantage over campus-based schools due to their flexibility and accessibility. Because students do not need to be in a specific place at a specific time for class, they are able to work at their own leisure anywhere in the country. This can be an ideal situation for someone who has family or work commitments and is unable to relocate in order to attend a physical campus. A campus-based education in Michigan, however, may be the better route for the student who prefers in-person interaction with students and teachers.

Michigan Nutritionist Salary and Employment Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), as of May 2012, there were 1,940 dietitians and nutritionists in Michigan, earning an hourly mean wage of $25.33 and an annual mean wage of $52,680 (BLS.gov/oes, 2013).

The following table provides dietitian and nutritionist salaries in the state by city:

Nutritionist Salary in Michigan by City
2012 Annual Mean Wage
Detroit-Livonia-Dearborn
$51,220
Grand Rapids-Wyoming
$55,570
Warren-Troy-Farmington Hills
$52,250
Lansing-East Lansing
$56,870

Nationally, the BLS projects a 20 percent growth between 2010 and 2020 for dietitians and nutritionists, which is faster than average for all occupations (BLS.gov/ooh, 2012). This growth may be attributed to the increased interest in preventative health care, such as preventing and treating illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease. With these conditions comes an increased need for nutritionists and dietitians to provide care for these people. An aging population will also require more nutritionists and dietitians (BLS.gov/ooh, 2012).

Michigan Nutritionist and Registered Dietitian Requirements

Nutritionists and dietitians in Michigan must become licensed with the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), which requires submitting an application. According to LARA (michigan.gov/lara), the licensure process to become a nutritionist in Michigan is still under development.

The idea of guiding and advising patients toward a healthier and perhaps happier life through health education is appealing to many.Take advantage of the nutritionist schools in Michigan to get started on your path toward what may be a satisfying and fulfilling career.
