New York is not just pizza parlors, delis and hot dog stands. In fact, the state of New York has pioneered some of the most prominent nutrition guidelines of any state in the US. Over the past few years, the state has passed laws and taken initiatives to improve the health of its citizens in numerous areas including:

  • The first state to ban trans fats in some restaurants
  • Improve restaurant menus to include more nutrition content
  • Provide more walking paths for its residents
  • Improve school menus and food available to children

Nutritionists and dietitians, along with public health officials, have been at the front of this movement. Moreover, the state of New York and the American Dietetic Association have certified these individuals for their knowledge and skill in these areas. The New York Dietetic Association requires that all registered dietitians (RD) and dietetic technicians (DTR) who wish to work as a New York nutritionist or dietitian successfully pass the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) examination and the New York Dietetic Association (NYDA) state exam, as well as the ADA’s education and certification process. The CDR administers these tests as the examining authority under the ADA, for those that have successfully completed the accredited college or university degrees either in New York or another state in which these degrees are offered.

Certification to become a registered dietitian (RD) or dietetic technician, registered (DTR) by the CDR, the New York Department of Health and the New York Dietetic Association are as follows:

  1. A four-year bachelor’s degree or higher composed of courses approved by the ADA’s Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) and the NYDA.
  2. Completion of a Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) accredited and supervised practice program or internship in the state of New York.
  3. Successfully pass the national exam administered by the CDR.
  4. Complete all continuing educational (CE) requirements to maintain certified status with the ADA and the New York Dietetic Association.
