Campus-based vs. Online Nutritionist Education in Wyoming

In order to become a practicing nutritionist or dietitian a student must earn a bachelor's or graduate degree with a curriculum that is approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietics Education (CADE) and of the American Diabetic Association (ADA). The major coursework of study typically includes human nutrition, food and nutrition dietics, nutrition education, and public health nutrition. Other coursework could include, but not be limited, to biology, chemistry, and physiology.

There may be many benefits to attending college classes online rather than at a brick-and-mortar campus. By completing classes online, students may have more options when it comes to balancing their work and schooling. There are a vast selection of degrees available to earn online and students may have the option to transfer these courses to a traditional college should they make the decision to do so. One last benefit may be that students are not forced to sit in the classroom for a duration of a lecture.

Wyoming Nutritionist Salary and Employment Outlook

Dietitians and nutritionists working in Wyoming earned mean annual wages of $54,870, according to May 2012 BLS data (bls.gov, 2012).The BLS does not have regional wage information available for dietitians and nutritionists in Wyoming like it does in other states. This is likely because the data count is too small. However, this could be an indication that Wyoming could be a place with opportunities to start a career as a dietitian or nutritionist. In fact, nationwide, the job growth outlook for nutritionists and dietitians is 20 percent from 2010 to 2020. As of 2010, 64,400 people were employed as dietitians and nutritionists in the U.S. Some 12,700 new positions are expected to become available during that time (bls.gov, 2012).

The job outlook could be promising in the field of nutritionists and dietitians simply because people are becoming more aware of the importance of a healthy diet in recent years. Many people are beginning to understand the importance of preventing and treating illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease and wanting to take positive health steps. The country's aging population is also growing and because of this, the elderly living in nursing homes typically require the care of nutritionists and/or dietitians.

Wyoming Nutritionist and Registered Dietitian Requirement

After earning a bachelor's degree there is typically a six-to-12 month long CADE internship required. Students may complete this 900 hour internship under the supervision of a registered or licensed dietitian. The internship can be conducted at a healthcare facility, community facility, or a food service corporation. Upon completion of the program, students must also pass the CDR examination (Commission on Dietetic Registration).

It wasn't until July 1, 2012 that Wyoming required nutritionists and dietitians to become licensed. There is a master's program available at the State University of Wyoming as well as several programs available online. There is an application fee of $200 required in Wyoming once you have met all of the requirements and the license is valid for two years before it becomes necessary to renew.
