Why is certification so important for Georgia nutritionists and dietitians? Why does Georgia Dietetic Association, the governing body in the state, as well as the American Dietetic Association's Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) require such strict guidelines for the education, examination and professional practice of today's nutrition professionals? The answer lies in the state of Georgia and the country's growing epidemic of obesity, a leading cause of illness and the most preventative health care measure affecting Americans today. To ensure that patients, clients and residents who receive care from today's nutritionists and dietitians is beneficial, correct and without any health dangers.

State licensure is required in the state of Georgia, however they defer examination and certification to the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), the American Dietetic Association's certification and examination body. The Georgia Dietetic Association does not currently require applicants to pass a specific state exam, instead recognizing the national CDR exam as certification for the state.

Certification as a registered dietitian (RD) or dietetic technician, registered (DTR) by the CDR is as follows:

  1. Completion of an acceptable four-year degree or higher focused on nutrition science, dietetics or closely related field
  2. Completion of the CDR's registration examination for dietitians
  3. Registration with the Georgia State Dietetic Association and state Board of Licensing
