New York Registered Dietitian and Dietetic Technician Basic Requirements for Certification:

Note: A majority of states have enacted laws regulating the practice of dietetics. Should one plan to practice dietetics in a particular state, it is important to check, The State Regulatory Agency prior to practicing dietetics. In many states it is a VIOLATION of state law to practice dietetics without a license.

Registered Dietitians, (RDs), are food and nutrition experts who have met the following criteria to earn the RD credential:

Registered Dietitian - The Commission on Dietetic Registration defines the Registered Dietitian (RD) as an individual who meets the following criteria:

  • Step 1: has completed the minimum of a Baccalaureate degree granted by a U.S. regionally accredited college or university, or equivalent.
  • Step 2: has met the current minimum academic requirements (Didactic Program in Dietetics) as approved by the Commission on Accreditation/Approval for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association (ADD).
  • Step 3: has completed pre-professional experience or internship accredited/approved by the Commission on Accreditation/Approval for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association (ADD).
  • Step 4: has successfully completed the Registration Examination for Dietitians.
  • Step 5: has paid the annual registration maintenance fee and
  • Step 6: has accrued 75 hours of approved continuing professional education within a specific five-year reporting period.

Some RDs hold additional certifications in specialized areas of practice. These are also awarded through The Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), the credentialing agency for ADA. Some additional certifications may include pediatric or renal nutrition, nutrition support, sports dietetics, gerontological nutrition, oncology nutrition, and diabetes education.

Dietetic Technician Registration - The Commission on Dietetic Registration defines the Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) as an individual who completes these requirements.

  • Step 1: has completed a minimum of an Associate Degree granted by a US accredited college/university.
  • Step 2: has completed a Dietetic Technician Program as accredited/approved by the Commission on Accreditation/Approval for Dietetics Education of the American Dietetic Association.
  • Step 3: has successfully completed the Registration Examination for Dietetic Technicians.
  • Step 4: has remitted the annual registration maintenance fee and
  • Step 5: has accrued 50 hours of approved continuing professional education every five years.

OR an alternative route to becoming a Registered Dietetic Technician is:

  • Step 1: has completed the minimum of a Baccalaureate degree granted by a U.S. regionally accredited college or university, or foreign equivalent.
  • Step 2: has met current minimum academic requirements (Didactic Program in Dietetics) as approved by the Commission on Accreditation/Approval for Dietetics Education of the American Dietetic Association.
  • Step 3: has completed a supervised practice program under the auspices of a Dietetic Technician Program as accredited/approved by The Commission on Accreditation/Approval for Dietetics Education of the American Dietetic Association.
  • Step 4: has fully completed the Registration Examination for Dietetic Technicians.
  • Step 5: has remitted the annual registration maintenance fee and
  • Step 6: has accrued 50 hours of approved continuing professional education within a specific five-year reporting period
