Texas State Registered Dietitian Certification and Dietetic Technician Requirements

The Texas Dietetic Association (TDA) requires individuals who wish to become a Registered Dietitian (RD), Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) or Licensed Dietitian to complete the following criteria:
Registered Dietitian
- Bachelors degree program approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE), the commissioning arm of the ADA.
- A six to 12 month professional experience or internship approved by CADE.
- Successful completion of the national Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) examination.
Dietetic Technicians, Registered
- Two-year associate's degree approved by CADE.
- A supervised professional experience or internship approved by CADE.
- Successful completion of the national Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) examination.
Licensed Dietitians:
- Bachelor's or graduate degree in nutrition, nutrition education, dietetics, or food systems management;
- An equivalent internship or approved professional experience by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Dietitians may be substituted for some of the educational requirements.
- Successful completion of the national Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) examination.
All positions are required to complete a certain amount of continuing education (CE) credits to maintain their status with the Texas Dietetic Association and the American Dietetic Association.
